Here are the myths about bioethanol heating:
- Bioethanol is toxic. FALSE!
Bioethanol produces carbon dioxide and water vapor, exactly like breathing.
The danger would come from an incomplete burn: when the flame burns in a room that is too small (under 9 m²) and poorly ventilated — exactly as with any other form of heating, be it a fireplace, a stove or a boiler.
- Bioethanol heats poorly. FALSE
A bioethanol fireplace gives out around 3000 W of heat, the equivalent of two electric radiators. For reference, a bioethanol flame reaches 300°C, compared with 1200°C for a wood fire — but half of that heat escapes up the flue.
Bioethanol is therefore recommended as effective supplementary heating, since it adds 3 to 4 degrees very quickly: 1.5 litres of bioethanol gives between 3 and 4 hours of heat. The pleasure of a real flame, without the odors!
- The risk of a flash effect is very high. FALSE
When bioethanol is left at room temperature in the burner for several hours, or when bioethanol is added while the fireplace is running, a flash effect — a sudden, impressive flare — can occur. As with any combustion appliance, we recommend following the instructions for use: wait a reasonable time for the burner to cool before relighting; do not put your head or hands over the burner; use a special long lighter, usually supplied with the fireplace. And do not pour the bioethanol straight into the burner. It is better to measure the quantity in the measuring cup.
